The Health Ambassador Programme is Project Yangon’s attempt to foster greater ownership over the healthcare amongst the local community. It is based on the concept of the community health worker – individuals in the community who are equipped with basic medical knowledge and can thus serve as the first line of healthcare. We will conduct a health ambassador training workshop over two afternoons for interested individuals. Topics this year will include nutrition, smoking, selected chronic diseases, back pain and medication safety. The syllabus has been adapted from the health education programme for developing countries. As this is a fairly new initiative, we are looking to refine the programme with each year that it is conducted. Therefore, time has been allocated for discussion during the workshop to allow the villagers to express their own beliefs about the health situation in their community. We hope this will allow us to be more strategic about topics covered in the workshop next year.
